A 'serious' crash on the M6 closed the services at Charnock Richard near Wigan this morning, police said.

Emergency services are attending the scene on the southbound carriageway between Junction 28 (Leyland) and Junction 27 (Standish).

The crash occurred shortly before 8am this morning, police confirmed.

The slip road to the services was closed off by police, Lancashire Live reports, but has since reopened.

The petrol station remains closed for fuel sales, Highways England said.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said earlier today: "We have closed the Charnock Richard services south on the M6 near Chorley, due to serious road traffic collision.

"Please be aware of this when travelling in that area. We will update your selves once we have reopened it."

Highways England released an update on the collision confirming that the services were now open - but that the petrol station remains closed for fuel.

A spokesperson said: "The M6 southbound exit slip road into the services at Charnock Richard Services has now reopened. We have been advised by the services that petrol station forecourt remains closed for fuel sales only."

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) confirmed it is attending the scene, alongside the police.

Lancashire Police said the collision involved one car.
