M6 remains closed after fuel tanker and wagon in crash

Motorists are facing lengthy delays as the M6 remains closed after a crash involving a fuel tanker and wagon.

The incident occurred at around 2pm on Tuesday, close to Sandbach services, and part of the M6 remains closed this morning.

Fuel leaked onto the carriageway after the wagon and a fuel tanker collided between Junction 17 for Sandbach and Junction 16 for Crewe.

The northbound carriageway was reopened at about 1am but the southbound carriageway remains closed, police said in an update on Wednesday morning.

And Highways England warned motorists in a tweet this morning: "The #M6 southbound remains closed between J17 and J16 near #Sandbach for collision clear up work. There are delays of approx. 30 minutes on approach."

In a statement, Cheshire Police said yesterday: "At 1.58pm today (16 February) police were called to a two vehicle collision on the M6 southbound at junction 17.

"Just after Sandbach services a wagon and a fuel tanker were in collision leading to fuel leaking onto the carriageway."
