M6 lane closures and long delays after pothole opens up on motorway

A pothole closed the M6 this morning and hour-long delays remain.

The motorway was closed briefly around 8am and two lanes remain shut while engineers carry out the repairs Southbound from junction 24 Liverpool Road, Ashton in Makerfield, and junction 23 East Lancashire Road, for Haydock.

There are reports of five miles of tailbacks stretching back to junction 26 for Orrell Interchange.

A tweet from Highways England North West said: "If you're heading on the M6 Southbound, please be aware there are LONG DELAYS.

"There is approx 5 miles of congestion, this will add an extra 50 minutes on to your normal journey time."

They added: "Two lanes remain closed on the #M6 south between #J24 #AshtonInMakerfield and #J23 #Haydock due to a pothole.

"Officers are on scene and maintenance workers are repairing the defect. We apologise for the delays caused."
