M6 fire: Camper van bursts into flames on major road during weekend getaway

A camper van burst into flames on the M6 causing traffic chaos on the busy motorway.

The vehicle - which looked like a VW camper  - was left a blackened shell following the fire this afternoon.

A witness said it looked like a mum and her child were caught up in the terrifying incident after spotting them on the side of the road speaking to fire fighters.

Two fire engines and Highway Patrol car are seen next to the burnt-out vehicle in footage posted on Twitter .

Chas Anderson shared footage of the aftermath, writing: "I hope the People are safe, looks like a kid with their mother, after the fire to camper van on The M6 northbound between junctions J14 and J15 #M6 ."

Drivers were warned to expect long delays earlier as smoke was blown across the motorway, reports the Stoke Sentinel .

A passenger posted the footage after spotting the fire from the other side of the carriageway.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the northbound carriageway between junction 14, for Stafford North, and 15, for Stoke-on-Trent, shortly before 2.45pm.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the scene and managed to get the fire under control.

Highways England confirmed two lanes were closed due to the incident, with traffic now being able to move past slowly.
