M6 driver went 40 miles down motorway in the wrong direction

Police have released new details after a 78-year-old man drove around 40 miles down the M6 in the wrong direction.

On Saturday (September 11) police received reports of a car travelling on the wrong side of the carriageway.

Officers tried to intercept the car - which was driving southwards down the northbound carriageway - at around junction 33 after it was spotted close to junction 34 for Lancaster.

But they failed in their attempts to stop the car - and it was only brought to a halt 44 miles after being spotted, at junction 27 for Standish, in Wigan.

A man aged 78 from Truro, in Cornwall, was arrested.

Images of the car driving down the motorway have been released by police, showing the car passing by a HGV driving in the right direction.

A Lancashire Road Police spokesperson said: "On September 11, 2021, this vehicle was reported travelling the wrong way on the M6 from junction 34.

"Patrols intercepted at junction 33 but it avoided tactical contact.

"Stinger was deployed at junction 28 and then junction 27 finally bringing the car to a halt.

"A 78-year-old male from Truro has been arrested."
