M6 delays of an hour after Land Rover towing cows overturns

There are hour-long delays on the M6 in Cheshire after a Land Rover overturned while pulling a cattle box.

Two lanes on the southbound carriageway have been shut between junction 23 for Haydock and junction 22 for Winwick while police and traffic officers attend.

The closure has resulted in tailbacks of more than six miles.

Two cows were inside the box at the time. Work is now underway to move the cows into a different cattle box.

The North West Motorway Police say they were called to the scene at 2.10pm.

There are no injuries, however motorists are being urged to avoid the area.

Highways England tweeted: "If travelling in Cheshire this afternoon on the M6 southbound pls be aware there are LONG DELAYS.

"Two lanes remain closed which is causing 6.5 miles of congestion, this is expected to add around 1 hour onto usual journey times.

"Plan ahead if travelling towards M62 and M56."
