M6 crash: Long delays after four car pile-up

Drivers using the M6 are facing long delays today after a pile-up involving at least four cars brought the motorway to a standstill.

An air ambulance had to land in the road to take one of the injured people to hospital following the accident on the Thelwall Viaduct, near Warrington, shortly before 9am.

Both carriageways and slip roads were closed at junction 21, causing drivers to park and get out of their cars as the gridlock continued.

The North West Motorway Police said all lanes have since been reopened but queues of up to 20 miles have been reported and delays were expected to continue into the afternoon.

A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said: “One person was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital by air ambulance and two other people were taken by road ambulance to Warrington Hospital.”
