M6 closed for hours due to massive lorry fire

The M6 was closed for hours this morning after a lorry burst into flames.

Highways England has closed the northbound carriageway between Stafford North , junction 14, and Crewe , junction 16, with delays expected to last through rush hour.

Traffic monitoring company INRIX says the road closed shortly after 3.50am and is expected to remain closed through the morning, according to StokeonTrent Live.

A Highways England spokesman said: "There is a total closure on the M6 Northbound between junction 14, Stafford North, and junction 16, Crewe.

"This is due to a HGV fire.

"Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service are on the scene."

A digger was called to the scene to assist with removing the remains of goods from the lorry.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called between junction 15 and the Keele Services and the fire itself is mainly dealt with now. We had two crews from Newcastle, one from Stafford and one from Eccleshall but it is just one from Newcastle and the water carrier from Cheadle there now.

"Three lanes are now reopen but we are still working in lanes one and two under supervision from Highways England.

"We had the first call at 3.12am.

"It was dealt with by two breathing apparatus that was increased to four, with four hose reel jets and the water carrier."
