M6 closed after fatal accident in Staffordshire as drivers told to avoid the area

The M6 motorway is closed in Staffordshire due to a fatal accident and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

Police earlier said there was an incident involving a lorry near junction 12 just after 1pm.

The southbound carriageway has been closed to the south of Stafford, Stoke on Trent Live reports.

There are reports of queuing traffic with delays of around 30 minutes.

A Highways England spokesman said:  "The M6 is currently closed from J13 to J12 with delays of at least 30 minutes covering several miles of the southbound carriageway.

"This closure is due to a road traffic collision and Highways England has resources deployed working hard to restore normal conditions as soon as possible.

"For traffic approaching the closure locally, you are advised to expect disruption with extra journey time and may potentially have to re-route your journey.

"If travelling towards this area from much farther afield, you may wish to change your strategic route, allow extra travel time and follow guidance from our on-road variable message signs and media."

The CMPG confirmed their collision investigation unit are at the scene - with Highways England saying they had no time for reopening yet.

A spokesman said: "Currently M6 south between 13 and 12. Working quickly to get the road open as soon as possible. Please be mindful whilst officers conduct their investigation.

"We are currently dealing with a fatal road traffic collision alongside the collision investigation unit on the M6 between J13 and 12.

"Please avoid the area and follow diversions put in place by Highways England."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 1.18pm to reports of a lorry RTC.

"Two ambulances and a paramedic officer are currently on the scene.”

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "We are urging motorists to avoid the M6 to the south of Stafford following an incident earlier this afternoon.

"The southbound carriageway has been closed to the south of Stafford following an incident involving a lorry near junction 12 just after 1pm.

"The southbound M6 is closed at junction 13, Stafford south, with traffic being diverted along the A449 Wolverhampton Road via Penkridge and onto the A5, before re-joining the M6 at junction 13.

"Traffic is slower, but moving, northbound.

"Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call 101 referring to incident 334 of 22 July."

A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman added: "A crew from Stafford are currently in attendance at this collision on M6 South between J13 and 12 and we would like to reiterate to drivers to avoid the area and follow the necessary diversions."
