M6 bridge graffiti hits out at 'middle lane morons'

Graffiti has been scrawled across a number of bridges on the M6, taking aim at 'middle-lane hoggers'.

One passenger travelling north between Preston and Lancaster spotted the bold message painted in yellow.

The graffiti hits out at motorists who stay in the middle lane of the motorway for longer than necessary.

One reads: "Keep left unless overtaking."

Middle lane hoggers could be hit with a £100 fine and penalty points (@QuarkMcMalus)

Another states: "Why are you a middle lane moron?"

Twitter user @QuarkMcMalus shared the image on social media, noting it was some "very middle-aged" graffiti, reports Lancs Live.

Rule 264 of the Highway Code states that: "You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear.

"If you are overtaking a number of slow-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past."

But many may not actually realise it is an offence that comes under careless driving.

In June 2013, new penalties were introduces to help tackle the problem and tailgating, giving police the power to issue fixed penalty notices for careless driving.

The change meant that motorists could be hit with a £100 and three penalty points, in line with other similar non-motoring fixed penalties.
