M56 police have busy night as yobs throw stones at HGVs

Yobs pelted heavy goods vehicles with stones during a busy Friday night for M56 traffic police.

A number of people, including children, threw stones that damaged the windscreens of two HGVs, according to the North West Motorway Police.

It was not reported if there were any injuries as a result of the incident, but police have in the past warned that such acts can cause serious injury and even death. Following a similar incident in the South in 2019, Chief Inspector Michael Hodder from Surrey’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “It is really worrying that some people think it is acceptable to throw anything off a motorway bridge. This is an extremely dangerous thing to do, and I would urge parents to impress upon their children the recklessness of throwing objects from bridges.

"This type of incident can, and has, ended in tragedy and I cannot stress how dangerous this is, particularly on the motorways where vehicles are travelling at higher speeds."

North West Motorway Police also reported that there were several collisions earlier in the evening on the North Cheshire motorway.

Officers said a positive breath test was recorded after one such road traffic collision.

And before that, officers attended an incident on the Denton Island road junction in Greater Manchester.

At 2.15am on Saturday, North West Motorway Police tweeted: "Busy night tonight. Started the evening with a collision on Denton Island. Shortly followed by a positive breath test from a collision on M56.

"We've had a number of pedestrians, and also youths throwing stones that damaged 2 x HGV's windscreens."
