M56 open again after crash leaves motorway shut for more than 10 hours

The M56 has re-opened after it was blocked for more than 10 hours following a collision.

Several vehicles are understood to have been involved in the smash, which took place between junction 10 to junction nine, near Lymm Interchange.

The westbound carriageway re-opened just before 7pm, but the eastbound carriageway remained just until just before 6am on Friday morning.

Drivers were unable to travel between junction three and junction one, for Kingsway.

A diversion route was put in place and motorists were told to expect delays of around an hour.

Witnesses said the crash appeared to involve a number of cars and a truck.

It is unknown at this stage if anybody was injured.

The air ambulance could be seen landing at the scene of the collision and Highways England described the incident as a 'serious multi-vehicle collision'.

A tweet from Highways England said: "The #M56 eastbound closure between #J3 #RoyalThorn and #J1 #A34 #Kingsway has now been removed. Thanks for your patience and understanding and have a safe journey."
