M56 likely to stay closed all night after lorry crash

The M56 could remain closed overnight for resurfacing works after a lorry overturned earlier this afternoon.

Long queues built up after the HGV crashed near junction 10 for Warrington just after 2.30pm.

Pictures from the scene showed the lorry on its side, jack-knifed across the carriageway.

The driver was treated for cuts and grazes.

The HGV has now been recovered, but roadworks need to take place which the motorway is likely to remain closed overnight.

National Highways North Tweeted: "Recovery of the overturned HGV has been completed however we need to resurface the carriageway due to the spillage.

"This works will be completed over night and we hope to reduce the closure to just within J10.

"We will update as soon as we change the closure."

The crash happened just after 2.30pm (NWMPG)

Earlier a spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue said: "Firefighters attended to a collision on the M56 between junction 11 to junction 10 on the eastbound carriageway.

"The collision involved a HGV which had landed on its side. Emergency services including ambulance and police also attended to the scene.

"Crews are using sawdust the HGV load was carrying and sand to soak up fuel that has leaked onto the road.

"The driver has been handed into the care of paramedics with cuts and grazes.

"Highways England are managing the lane closures.

"Recovery of the HGV is in place and crews stood by with a hose reel as a precaution."
