M56 crash after six car pile up causes eight mile long queues

A serious crash between five cars and a van on the M56 is causing eight miles of tailbacks.

Emergency services scrambled to the M56 between junction 12, Runcorn and junction 14, Chester services, on Friday, September 17 at 1.37pm to reports of a serous crash.

Police, fire and ambulance attended the scene on the eastbound carriageway and found there had been a crash involving a silver Ford Transit van, a black Ford Fiesta, a Blue BMW 320D, a white Toyota Van, a black Ford Galaxy and a white Mazda 3.

A man had to be cut out of his vehicle by the fire service due to his injuries and was rushed Warrington District General Hospital.

Recovery work is ongoing at the scene.

Two lanes of the motorway are closed and the AA traffic map is reporting queues of eight miles due to the accident.

Traffic on the M53 from junction 10, Little Stanney and the A494 is also struggling due to the crash.
