The M56 has been closed for more than two hours this evening after a lorry filled with grains overturned.
The closure is in place eastbound between junctions 10 (Warrington) and 9 (M6).
The incident happened shortly before 7 pm this evening, December 16.
A huge clean up operation is in place this evening.
Pictures shared by North West motorway police show the tipped over lorry and the heap of grains over the carriageway.
Fire officers are also pictured on scene.
A statement on the National Highways website said; "North West Motorway Police Group lead the response to the ongoing incident and have closed the carriageway to allow them to work at scene.
"National Highways have resources in attendance to assist with traffic management."
Police added it was "likely to be some time though for recovery and clear up" at around 9 pm.
A diversion route is in place, with drivers asked to avoid the area if possible.
The M56 can be exited at junction 10, before taking the first exit off the roundabout on to the A49 northbound.
From there, road users can turn onto the B5356 eastbound to the M6 junction 20 roundabout.
Taking the 2nd exit to another roundabout, drivers can take the third exit and rejoin the M56 at junction 9.
No further details about the incident have been confirmed yet.
