Driver's 'lucky escape' from M56 crash

A driver has had a lucky escape after a lorry overturned in a crash on the M56.

The motorway was closed for nine hours after a crash between Junction 10 of the M56 for Stretton, Warrington, and Junction of the M6.

Emergency services were called to the motorway at around 6.20pm on Thursday evening and a closure was put in place.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix reported that the incident involved a car and an overturned lorry.

Photos taken by police at the scene show the aftermath of the crash, with the lorry smashed up after crashing into a road sign.

North West Motorway Police said one driver was taken to hospital "with only minor injuries."

Another photo shared by police shows the extent of the spillage, with grains left all over the road after the vehicle overturned.

In an update at 3.30am this morning National Highways said the motorway has now been reopened.

North West Motorway Police tweeted: "The M56 eastbound is currently closed from Junction 10 Stretton/A49 whilst police and @HighwaysNWEST deal with an RTC - due to a large spillage this closure is expected to remain in place for some time."

In an update this morning, police said: "This closure has now been lifted. One very lucky driver was taken to hospital with only minor injuries."
