M53 traffic stopped as police called over fears for man on bridge

A man has been detained after police were called to the M53 over fears for a man on a bridge near Junction 3.

People had posted on social media about an incident at the bridge, which is close to the Arrowe Park and Birkenhead turn-off at Junction 3 of the M53 in Wirral, with reports of traffic on the motorway coming to a standstill at around 3.30pm today.

Merseyside Police have confirmed offers were called out to attend an incident this afternoon which led to the detention of a man under the Mental Health Act.

The spokesperson said: "We were called at just before 3.30pm to reports of concern for a male on a bridge at junction 3 of the M53.

"Patrols have attended and the man has been detained under the Mental Health Act."

Last Tuesday afternoon, a man fell from a bridge at Junction 2 after emergency services rushed to the scene, with the man later taken to hospital.

In April, a man died after falling from a bridge at Junction 3 shortly after rush hour. The motorway was closed in both directions as emergency services dealt with the tragic incident.

On social media people spoke of their concerns at the number of incidents on bridges on the motorway in recent months, as well as their relief that the man had been brought to safety.

One person said: "not again" while another added: "Oh no! Not another one? This is heartbreaking."

Another person said; "He’s ok police got him back over safely" while one added: "thank goodness he's safe!"
