M50 introduces 'managed motorway' system with new variable speed limits

The M50 is set to be the countries first 'managed motorway' under changes set to be revealed today.

Under these new proposals, controllers in the docklands will be able to divert traffic, introduce variable speed limits and even close lanes for emergency services.

This overhaul is part of a €50 million plan to alleviate traffic on the M50. The system will also need approximately €30 million to run over the next 10 years.

The entire scheme will be rolled out on a phased basis so that drivers and emergency services can get used to the new layout.

It will begin in Autumn with variable speed limits being displayed on overhead gantries as guidance at the beginning.

Junction 4 at Ballymun and Junction 6 at Castleknock will be the first areas to display these new signs.

The entire M50, up to Sandyford, will be operating under these new guidelines by Autumn 2022.

Over the coming weeks, the Road Safety Authority will launch a public awareness campaign to help motorists become accustomed to the new layout of the M50.
