M5 traffic: Why armed police stopped car near Cribbs Causeway today

A man has been detained after armed police stopped a vehicle on the M5 slip road, near Cribbs Causeway.

Officers had intelligence which linked the car to firearms offences, an Avon and Somerset Police spokeswoman confirmed

A witness, who wished not to be named, said there were 12 armed police officers on the route at around 6:30pm this evening (June 18).

He said: "About 12 cops masked with rifles, on slip road by Wild Place Project."

A force spokeswoman confirmed officers 'stopped and checked a vehicle' on the M5.

She said: "Armed officers stopped the vehicle as there was intelligence linking it to firearms offences.

"The vehicle has been seized for a search, one man has been detained and enquiries continue.

"No firearms have been found."
