M5 traffic: Van and lorry crash causing miles of queues near junction 30 northbound as lanes close

A man has suffered serious hip and arm injuries following a major crash on the M5 near Exeter.

He has been taken by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth following the incident, which saw a flat-bed lorry and van collide on the northbound side of the carriageway between Junction 30 and 31 at about 7.45am on Tuesday morning.

Police, fire crews and the ambulance service were all on the scene, and the carriageway was closed completely to allow the air ambulance to land according to Devon Live.

Long delays

Drivers on their way to work have been advised to avoid the route completely, with diversions in place.

Traffic is queued back to the A38 at Haldon Hill and the A380 Telegraph Hill, and there are also major delays into Exeter.

Congestion is heavy around Alphington, Exminster, Bridge Road and on the diversion routes.

This is how to avoid the M5 if you are heading northbound this morning:

The entry slip at junction 31 heading northbound is closed, and Highways England have put a diversion in place. Drivers should travel via Hollow Diamond for the M5 northbound and follow the A379.

Traffic is also being diverted via the A30, but there are already long delays on both of these routes.

Traffic is tailed back all across Exeter, with delays from Exminster to Bridge Road.
