M5 traffic: Motorway closed in both directions after serious crash

A large stretch of one of the UK's busiest motorways was shut in morning rush hour after a serious crash.

The M5 was closed in both directions between junction 22, for Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, and junction 23, for Bridgwater North in the same county, for a few hours.

Emergency services rushed to the smash, said to involve multiple vehicles.

Highways England says it could not estimate when the motorway would reopen but diversions were in place.

These took traffic onto the A38 in both directions, through Highbridge, Huntspill and Pawlett.

Photos taken as early as 6.45am show huge tailbacks of traffic on the M5.

The M5 runs more than 160 miles from West Bromwich, West Midlands, to the Exeter area in Devon.

It was opened in 1962 to link the Midlands with the southwest.

Nowadays, it is one of the busiest motorways in the UK.
