M5 stretch closed overnight for repairs after fatal lorry crash led to different section being shut for hours

A stretch of the M5 will be closed overnight for repairs following a fatal lorry crash earlier today (Sunday, January 17) on a different section of the motorway which forced it to be shut for hours.

The southbound side of the motorway will be closed between junctions 17 and 18, from 9pm until 6am; while the northbound side will be blocked off from J18a to J17.

This is for pre-planned works but comes after the vehicle overturned on the northbound carriageway around 8am this morning, after joining the M5 from the M4. Repairs to the central reservation for that stretch will be carried out later.

Highways England updated drivers on Twitter: "Some planned closures in the region tonight: 21:00-06:00 #M5 southbound J17 to J18 #M5 northbound J18a to J17.

"Information on other full closures: https://highwaysengland.co.uk/travel-updates/daily-closure-report/ #WeAreWorkingForYou "

No other vehicles were involved in the crash but diversions following the incident affected several roads around the Almondsbury Interchange.

Earlier today, traffic-watch website Inrix said: "M5 in both directions closed due to accident investigation work from J14 B4509 (Thornbury / Falfield) to J15 M4 J20 (Almondsbury Interchange).

"Traffic is coping well. Investigation work is ongoing and the lorry is in the process of getting recovered. There is barrier damage which will need repairs."

The website also gave details of an alternative route: "Diversion - Follow the solid circle symbol use the A38 to re-join at J16. Northbound should follow the solid triangle symbol to re-join at J14."
