M5 southbound 'closed to traffic for rest of morning' after serious accident near J22

A woman has suffered serious head injuries after an accident involving a lorry and a car on the M5.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary were called to reports of a two vehicle crash between junctions 22 and 23 southbound shortly before 6am today (November 16).

A police spokesperson said: "The incident involved a lorry and a car.

"The occupant of the car – a woman – has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries."

"The motorway is closed from J22 (southbound) and is likely to remain closed throughout the morning to allow collision investigators to carry out an examination of the scene."

The northbound carriageway of the motorway remains open.

Vehicles travelling south into North Somerset can expect some delays around J22 as traffic is diverted via the A38.

The spokesman added: "Thank you for your patience and understanding while we deal with the incident."
