M5 remains closed after 'severe' crash sparks police investigation

The M5 near Clevedon remains closed this morning (August 6) after a 'severe' crash on Monday evening.

A vehicle overturned in yesterday's collision, which took place between J21 (Weston-super-Mare ) and J19 (Portishead) shortly before 10pm.

Traffic was held while emergency crews closed all four lanes on the northbound carriageway, causing miles of traffic and heavy delays.

This is an ongoing incident which you can get live updates for here.

Police officers have been at the scene through the night to carry out investigation work.

Highways England confirmed this morning that vehicles remained trapped on the M5 at 4.15am due to the ongoing closure and that officers were 'working hard' to clear the congestion.

In a post on Twitter, a spokesperson for the agency said: "Our officers are working hard on clearing traffic caught within the closure of the M5 north between J21 and J19.

"We appreciate your patience. It is very slow going due to a large number of HGVs that need turning.

"They're doing everything they can to get you out of the closure."
