M5 closure: Police apologise after wrongly saying lanes had reopened to traffic

All lanes on the M5 northbound remain closed after a body was found.

Gloucestershire Constabulary mistakenly told people the road had partially re-opened earlier this afternoon - a force spokesperson has now apologised for the error.

The motorway was closed in both directions between J11a and J12 near Gloucestershire after the incident was reported at around 4.10am today (October 30).

Police urged motorists to remain patient amid ongoing delays , which are continuing.

A force spokesperson tweeted: "We have to correct the information issued 30 minutes ago. Both carriageways of the M5 remain closed between junction 12 & 11A.

"Work is continuing to open lanes 1 and 2 on the NB carriageway and we hope this will be completed in the next hour. We are very sorry for this error.

Specialist capabilities chief inspector Alistair Barby said: "We appreciate that these closures have caused a significant impact on people travelling in the area today and I would like to thank everyone for their continued patience throughout this.

"Our officers remain at the scene investigating the circumstances of what has taken place and we have had a number of people contact us with information following our appeals.

He continued: "While we understand how much impact these closures are having, someone has died and it is our responsibility to get answers for their family as to what has happened, while also protecting the dignity of the person involved.

"The investigation continues and we are still keen to hear from anyone who has not yet contacted police who travelled between junctions 11 and 12 on either carriageway between 3.45am and 4.15am today."
