M5 near Bristol to close to traffic overnight

Motorists have been warned a section of the M5 will be closed this weekend so a footbridge can be removed by crane.

The route will be shut in both directions from J13 (Stroud) to J14 (Dursley) between 8pm today (January 25) and 9am tomorrow, according to Highways England.

Somerset Live reports the overnight work will see a crane dismantle the 40-year-old footbridge linking the southbound and northbound parts of the Michaelwood Services.

The footbridge has reached the end of its life, according to Somerset Live, and was closed for safety reasons in 2018.

In a Twitter post, Highways England wrote that a diversion will be in place, before urging drivers to allow extra time for journeys.
