M5 lorry crash: Police warn to avoid area near Bristol amid three-mile tailbacks

Police have warned drivers to avoid the M5 northbound after a lorry crashed and overturned near Bristol.

Traffic is reportedly queuing for about three miles from the scene, about halfway between junction 20, near Clevedon, and junction 19, near Portishead.

The carriageway is partially closed, with lane three open and first two lanes shut (there are three lanes overall).

Avon and Somerset Police said there are no life threatening injuries to the driver of the lorry and the carriageway was temporarily restricted due to debris on the lane.

Avon and Somerset Police said on Facebook: "Junctions 19 to 20 of the M5 northbound are currently restricted to a single lane due to an obstruction following an earlier collision between a car and a heavy goods vehicle.

"This is causing significant delays and motorists are advised to avoid the route where possible."

HIghways England said on Twitter: "#M5 Northbound J20 #Clevedon to J19 #Gordano. Lane 3 is now running past the scene. Recovery has been arranged for the overturned lorry.

"Heat maps suggest there is approximately 5km of queuing traffic on approach to the scene. Please be cautious through the area."

Data site Inrix reports the road was partially closed at about 6.40am.
