Emergency services were deployed after being alerted to a vehicle fire on the M5 motorway between Gloucestershire and Southbound Bristol.

At around 12.40 pm all lanes were reopened and traffic returned to normal.

A spokesperson from Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "We attended at around 11:30 am after a car travelling on the M5 and due to a mechanical fault with the car, one of the rear breaks locked on which caused it to start smoking.

"We deployed two fire and rescue crews but due to the size of the fire, one crew was sent back leaving just the Patchway team who then used a bucket of water to cool the vehicle down.

"The vehicle then limped off the motorway in conjunction with the Highways Agency to clear the road - in what was a completely accidental incident."
