M5 hit with hour-long delays and 11 miles of tailbacks after lorry bursts into flames

Motorists face severe delays on the M5 this afternoon after a lorry burst into flames near Bristol.

Firefighters are at the scene of the blaze that happened on the outskirts of the city this morning (Monday, August 9).

There are 11 miles of tailbacks and it's taking motorists around one hour ten minutes to clear the jams for those travelling in Bristol and Somerset.

The earlier closure of the M32 has also contributed to the delays.

Emergency services are still at the scene of the fire.

Smoke was seen from miles around after the incident on the M5 northbound between Junction 18 (Avonmouth) and Junction 17 (Cribbs Causeway).

Traffic and travel service Inrix said: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to lorry fire on M5 Northbound near J17 A4018 (Cribbs Causeway).

"All traffic was held around 12:10, after a lorry caught fire on the hard shoulder.

"Delays in both directions not helped by the earlier closure on the M32."

The M32 was closed northbound out of Bristol between junctions three and two after the sudden death of a man.

Highways England said on Twitter: "M5 northbound J18 Avonmouth to J17 Cribbs Causeway we are en-route to a vehicle fire.

"Avon Fire are currently on scene dealing and have lane closures in place at this time. Please approach with caution and obey signals set."

An update then said: "There are 11.2 miles of traffic on approach northbound which is likely to add 70 mins to your journey time. Plan ahead."
