M5 fatal crash: Investigations continue after lorry driver dies

Investigations will continue today into a fatal collision in which a lorry driver died on the M5 near Bristol.

The incident happened northbound at around 8am on Sunday (January 17) when a HGV that had joined from the M4 overturned on to the central reservation.

The lorry driver died from their injuries and police have appealed for witnesses who have not already contacted officers to get in touch.

The motorway was closed in both directions between junction 14 for Thornbury and junction 15 for the Almondsbury Interchange for investigation work and for the lorry to be recovered.

The closure continued for the barrier to be repaired into Sunday evening and the motorway reopened at around 9.30pm last night.

Diversions were in place for those motorists on essential journeys.

Avon and Somerset Police said in a statement yesterday: "We’re appealing for witnesses following a serious collision on the M5 involving one lorry.

"At about 8am, an HGV travelling northbound on the M5, having just joined from the M4, overturned onto the central reservation.

"Sadly, the driver of the lorry has died from their injuries and we’ll be deploying specialist officers to support their next of kin."

If you saw this collision and haven’t yet spoken with the police, please call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5221011328.
