M5 delays hit two hours as crashes, breakdowns and holidaymakers bring motorway to a crawl

The M5 through Bristol and beyond is grinding to a halt as the impact of breakdowns, an accident and holidaymakers creates huge delays.

Motorists have facied journey times in excess of two hours as they crawl from Somerset through Bristol and on towards Gloucestershire.

The M5 is under pressure across the South West as brighter weather sees more people head off on holiday - while others are returning from their getaways.

Among the incidents snarling up traffic were a collision on the southbound motorway between junction 16 for the A38 and junction 17 for Cribbs Causeway. A broken down lorry also saw a sliproad closed coming off the northbound M5 for Michaelwood Services between junctions 14 and 13.

Both these incidents have since cleared.

At 6.30pm, the journey time was 90 minutes northbound between junction 26 (Wellington) and junction 21 for Weston-super-Mare.

And there was queuing traffic on the M4 westbound at junction 20 for the Almondsbury Interchange.
