M5 crash: People gawping at lorry and caravan crash scene adding to delays

Motorists slowing down to look at a crash scene are causing additional delays on a stretch of the M5 near Bristol.

A lorry and a car towing a caravan collided on the southbound carriageway just before junction 19 for Portishead.

This saw all traffic held just across the Avonmouth Bridge and even though just one lane remained closed at 4.30pm, long delays remained.

The queuing traffic was because of three main things, according to traffic and travel service Inrix.

They were:

  • The recovery work of the vehicles involved in the collision
  • Debris on the road
  • People slowing down to look at the collision on the opposite die

Motorists were finding their journey times extended by around 30 minutes.

The incident happened at around 2.15pm today and saw the lorry across lanes one and two with the car and caravan facing the wrong way in lane four.

Lane one remains closed and traffic is now moving on the other reopened lanes.
