M5 closures as ice, snow and sleet cause four car crashes in dangerous conditions

A part of one of the UK's main motorways has been shut down due to ice, sleet and snow making driving dangerous.

A car was overturned this morning on the M5 as brutal weather battered the motorway.

Emergency services attended four crashes along a stretch of road between J21 and J20, Somerset Live reported.

A stretch of road has been closed as recovery work is undertaken between  J21 A370 (Weston-Super-Mare) and J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way (Clevedon).

A traffic officer was seen waving people off the carriage at J21.

At 8.42am Highways England issued an update on the road's status.

The organisation tweeted: "#M5 Northbound J21 #Weston-Super-Mare towards J20 #Clevedon - Recovery is underway 1 scene and expected to arrive at another 2 shortly.

"As soon as we are able to clear the carriageway of all incidents, we hope to reopen with speed restrictions."

Ross Hodge shared this photo of the upturned car that had plunged off the motorway.

The vehicle was then loaded onto a truck and taken away.

Highways England earlier announced that a hail storm had caused the road surface to become slippery.

Weston-super-Mare fire station earlier attributed the issues to 'ice and slush'.
