M5 closure delays rubbish collection in North Somerset

Rubbish and waste collections across North Somerset have been disrupted – due to a major incident on the M5.

Roads across North Somerset were left gridlocked after a fatal crash on the motorway yesterday which left it closed for several hours.

The M5 was shut between J19 and J21 after a pedestrian was struck on the southbound carriageway at around 4.30am on Monday.

The motorway re-opened yesterday at around 2pm.

The closure left many other routes –including the A370 – and roads around Clevedon and Portishead gridlocked for much of the day.

The congestion meant that many recycling and rubbish collections were unable to be made across the north of the district.

Crews are out this morning attempting to catch up with the backlog.

Extra teams have been brought in to try and clear collections.

A spokesman for North Somerset Council said: “Due to the closure of the M5 and traffic issues that caused delays there were some unfinished collections yesterday.

“The crew are returning to complete these today.

“There is no garden waste support crew but there is an extra team for recycling & a supervisor van helping out with the narrow roads.”

The authority is urging people, due to the hot weather, to sort out their recycling boxes to help speed up collections.
