M5 closed due to a pothole on the motorway

The M5 has been closed in one direction this afternoon (December 29) due to a pothole on the road.

A pothole has been discovered on the southbound carriageway of the motorway, with the road closed to carry out the necessary repairs.

All traffic has been held on the road heading southbound at Almondsbury, towards the M4 westbound heading for Junction 21, for Awkley.

It is hoped that the traffic will be released very soon and Highways England are currently on site to fix the problem on the road.

Highways England posted on Twitter: “M5 Southbound at Almondsbury towards M4 Westbound heading for J21 Awkley.

“Traffic has been stopped for a short period in order to complete some pothole repairs.

“We hope to be able to release the traffic very soon.”

It comes as emergency repairs have closed one lane of the road further down the M5 in Somerset.

One lane is closed in each direction for emergency repairs to the central reservation barirers.

The work follows at collision where a lorry crossed the central reservation on Monday evening (December 28).
