M5 accident: What we know about southbound traffic closure and when road will reopen today

A woman has suffered serious head injuries after an accident involving a lorry and a car on the M5.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary was called to reports of a two vehicle crash between junctions 22 and 23 southbound shortly before 6am today (November 16).

A police spokesperson said: "The incident involved a lorry and a car.

"The occupant of the car – a woman – has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries."

"The motorway is closed from J22 (southbound) and is likely to remain closed throughout the morning to allow collision investigators to carry out an examination of the scene."

We are providing live updates on the latest situation.

The northbound carriageway of the motorway remains open.

Traffic is being diverted around the southbound closure via the A38 - heavy traffic is reported on the diversion route.

There is nearly six miles of traffic on the motorway before J22.

Police have thanked drivers for their patience and understanding while they deal with the incident.

Projected reopening time

Highways England reports that the M5 southbound between J22 and 23 will remain closed while specialist recovery takes place.

This will require forensically removing the car involved from under the LGV.

Highways England hopes to start to reopen the motorway by mid afternoon.

There was a separate incident on the M5 northbound, during which a car flipped. All lanes have re-opened after two vehicles were involved in the incident northbound from J18 M49 to J17 A4018 (Cribbs Causeway).
