M4 traffic warning as disruption to continue for most of today

Highways England has warned there will be disruption on the M4 for most of the day after a lorry shed its load of pilau rice over the motorway.

The rice was spilled onto the westbound carriageway between junctions 16 at Swindon and 17 at Chippenham earlier this morning, leaving pallets strewn across the road.

While the rice has now been cleared, it caused damage to lanes one and two which may require surfacing, with Highways England working with specialist contractors to clear any rice which has congealed into the road.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

Ian Thompson, network operations manager at Highways England, said: “We are working as quickly as possible to remedy the damage to the road surface and ensure it is safe for motorists to use.

“The lane one and two closure is likely to remain in place throughout the day so please bear this in mind when planning your journeys and consider alternative routes.”
