M4 traffic: Firefighters tackling blaze involving hay bales as motorway closed

The M4 is blocked in both directions this evening (Monday, January 10) after a lorry caught fire.

The HGV was transporting hay bales, according to Wiltshire Police, and the road has had to be closed in both directions between J16 and J17 (Chippenham) due to drifting smoke.

The force added that the closure is expected to last "a considerable amount of time".

Flames broke out of the vehicle shortly before 6pm, however, only one lane of the M4 westbound was closed initially.

But minutes later, emergency crews decided to close the entire westbound carriageway to deal with the fire.

National Highways announced that both the westbound and eastbound carriageways were closed entirely due to "drifting smoke".

Wiltshire Police tweeted to say that they are on the scene in order to assist Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue who are dealing with the fire.

The force confirmed that the lorry was transporting hay bales, adding: "This closure is expected to remain in place for a considerable amount of time".

National Highways said that they "expect the fire to take some effort to put out", and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said that five crews are at the scene dealing with the blaze.

Traffic maps show queues stretching back for miles on the westbound carriageway, while there is some traffic blocked on the eastbound side as well.
