M4 to stay closed to traffic 'until afternoon at least' after serious accident

The M4 heading towards Bristol will remain closed for most of today following a collision involving three lorries which happened in the early hours of this morning.

There is no confirmation yet on the condition of casualties, but fire crews had to cut one driver free from his cab at the scene on the M4 just before Junction 18 of the M4 in South Gloucestershire.

The crash happened on the westbound side of the motorway, two hours later after a car overturned on the eastbound side.

The entire M4 has been closed since before 2am this morning (September 24) while emergency services are at the scene.

Highways England said they hope to reopen the eastbound side of the motorway later this morning, but the westbound side where the lorries collided, will be longer.

"Following the serious collision on the M4 between junction 17 and 18 earlier, both carriageways remain closed," a Highways England spokesperson confirmed mid-morning.

"Collision investigation is taking place and we are hopeful to regain the eastbound later this morning. Westbound will remain closed until this afternoon at least. Thank you for your patience," he added.

There are long queues of traffic on the A-roads of South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset and Wiltshire, that are being used to divert motorway traffic around the scene.

Congestion is particularly bad on the northbound A46 between Bath and junction 18, and around the A350 Chippenham bypass.
