M4 queues for miles after boxes scatter across all three lanes

Six mile-long queues have formed on the M4 after a significant number of boxes have been left scattered across the carriageway.

The stretch between junction 19 and junction 18 was initially closed at around 6.46am this morning due to the debris.

Traffic officers and Avon and Somerset Police arrived to clear the scene and close the stretch of the motorway.

As of 7.30am, lane three was cleared allowing motorists to slowly pass the scene.

Lane two re-opened at 8.15am.

Six mile-long queues were still being reported at 8.20am with standstill traffic all the way back to junction 18.

Travel time to pass the scene is approximately 50 minutes.

It remains unknown where or how the boxes became strewn across the M4 this morning.
