Diversions are in place off the M4 as a stretch of the motorway in Wiltshire remains closed following a lorry fire.

Fire crews and emergency services are already on scene on the M4 between junctions 14 and 15 after the fire was reported shortly after 2.30pm.

Traffic was initially held both ways while initial work was done but full closures have now been implemented, with work ongoing to free trapped traffic from the scene.

Highways England have confirmed the diversion routes that are now in place for M4 traffic over the next few hours while the closure continues.

Those travelling eastbound are advised to leave the motorway at junction 15 and transfer across to the A338 before rejoining at junction 14.

Those going westbound will exit at junction 14 to the A338 and then join the A4 towards Marlborough, where they will join the A346 towards junction 15.

The full statement said: "The M4 in Wiltshire is closed in both directions between J15 and J14 due to a lorry fire. Wiltshire Fire & Rescue and emergency services are currently in attendance.

"Road users travelling eastbound are advised to follow the Hollow Circle diversion signs. Exit at J15 then take the B4192. Continue on the B4192 then take the A338 and continue until you re-join the M4 at J14.

"Road users travelling westbound are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion signs. Exit at J14 then take the A338 towards Hungerford then join the A4 towards Marlborough. At Marlborough take the A346 and continue until you re-join the M4 at J15.

"If travelling towards this area from much farther afield, you may wish to change your planned route, allow extra travel time and follow guidance from our on-road variable message signs and media."

Delays that could last until 5pm are already being reported around the scene of the fire, leaving miles of vehicles currently stuck on the approach to the scene.

The latest update from traffic monitoring service INRIX says: "M4 in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to lorry fire between J14 A338 (Hungerford) and J15 A346 Marlborough Road (Swindon East).

"Both carriageways have been closed for safety reasons. police are working to release trapped traffic from the scene.

"Diversion - Eastbound traffic is diverted via Eddington towards Newbury. Westbound traffic is diverted via Marlborough towards Swindon."

Motorists trapped in the queues have already been seen leaving their vehicles despite warnings not to do so from Highways England.

Highways England said on twitter: "Please approach the area with caution and if you are in the stopped traffic please do not leave your vehicles

"Due to the nature of the fire and the contents of the lorry we are looking to start installing full closures of the M4 in both directions between J14 and J15.

"If you are in the trapped traffic please bear with us, we will work to get you moving soon."
