Police have closed the M4 in both directions near Bath because of two serious crashes.
Wiltshire Police said the motorway was shut early on Thursday morning between junctions 17 and 18 following a “serious road traffic collision” and was expected to be closed “for several hours”.
Officers tweeted: “Drivers should avoid using this stretch of the road until told otherwise. Follow @HighwaysSWEST for the latest info on diversions.
Highways England said there were "two separate serious collisions".
Diversions were put in place and motorists were advised to use alternative routes.
