M4 chaos after side door on van slid open spilling boxes and roofing materials

Highways England has issued an update on the debris and boxes which blocked the M4 and caused miles of tailbacks

The M4 westbound qwas closed for more than two hours this morning (October 25) after debris was scattered across all three lanes causing chaos for travelling motorists.

The incident was first reported at 6.46am and traffic officers were promptly on the scene for the clean-up.

As a result of the incident, traffic was unable to pass and six mile-long queues were reported between junction 19 and junction 18.

Highways England has provided more information on the nature of the debris.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: "The boxes, fascia boards and other roofing materials were spilt from a Luton van after its side door had slid open accidentally."

As of 7.30am, lane three was cleared allowing motorists to slowly pass the scene.

Lane two re-opened at 8.15am.

Six mile-long queues were still being reported after 9am with standstill traffic all the way back to junction 18.

Travel time to pass the scene was approximately 50 minutes at its peak, although traffic has since returned to normal.
