M32 Bristol closed overnight after heavy rain causes flooding

The M32 was forced to close in both directions overnight after heavy rain sparked floods on the motorway.

The carriageway was closed in both directions around junction 3 near Easton just before 2.15am this morning (December 26).

Avon and Somerset Police were at the scene overnight, along with National Highways Traffic Officers.

Traffic was diverted via the J3 roundabout while the closure was in place.

In an update at 2.25am, traffic information service Inrix said: "The motorway is flooded beneath the roundabout, so traffic is being diverted 'up and over' via the roundabout."

The flooding was sparked by heavy overnight rain that hammered Bristol in the late hours of Christmas Day and the early hours of Boxing Day morning.

Heavy showers pelted the city, sparking flash floods on the motorway.

However, traffic disruption was reported to be minimal, with limited amounts of traffic on the roads in the early hours of the morning.

A tweet from National Highways South West overnight said of the situation: "M32 [closed] in both directions at J3 Bristol A4032 due to flooding. Avon and Somerset Police on scene along with National Highways Traffic Officers. Traffic diverting via the J3 roundabout. Minimal delays at this time."

The road was eventually re-opened after a closure of around two hours, with closures being lifted around 4am.

INRIX issued a further update confirming the re-opening of the road, with National Highways also tweeting further confirmation.

The tweet said: "The flooding has been cleared and the road through J3 of M32 has been re-opened in both directions. No delays."
