M32 Bristol closed for seven hours after Bank Holiday Monday crash

A "serious" collision in the early hours of the morning led to the closure of a major route into Bristol this morning.

Emergency services raced to the scene after a car left the carriageway and plunged into the undergrowth.

Avon and Somerset Police say they were alerted by the ambulance service about the accident on the M32 at around 2am today (Bank Holiday Monday, August 30).

A spokesman described the accident as "serious" but no updates on casualities has yet been made availble/

The road has been closed from Junction 1 A4174 (Hambrook) to Junction 2 B4058 Stapleton Road (Eastville).

It is likely to be closed for several hours and it could be shut until midday.

Avon and Somerset Police tweeted: "Officers are at the scene of a serious single-vehicle collision on the #M32 southbound between J1-2. An investigation is underway. Details of the diversion in place can be found in the @HighwaysSWEST"

Highways England is describing the collision as "severe".

Highways South West tweeted in the early hours that staff are working with police to reopen the main routes into the city from the M4 and M5.

Highways England has recently said in its latest tweet: "We have reopened the carriageway now with a lane 1 closure past scene. Please approach the scene with caution. Thank you for your patience."
