The M25 has closed in the anti-clockwise direction after a "serious" crash.
All traffic has been held at Junction 6 following the incident at around 7.15pm.
Three and a half miles of congestion have backed up from the crash site, causing long delays, Surrey Live reported.
Both Surrey Police and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service are at the scene, Highways England said.
INRIX reads: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident on M25 anticlockwise before Junction 6 (Godstone). Congestion to J7 (M23 interchange).
"All traffic has been held while the accident is attended to in lanes three and four."
According to Surrey Police a vehicle crashed into the central reservation.
Some people stuck in the traffic took to social media to vent their frustrations at the jam.
One person said that the queue had scuppered their intentions of voting before the polls close at 11pm.
Another Twitter user jokingly invited people for an election night party in their stationary car.
Earlier this evening, two lanes were closed on the M3 northbound due to a two-vehicle crash, which was cleared at around 5.20pm.
