M2 gorse fire sparks emergency response as firefighters at scene

Firefighters were called to deal with a gorse fire on the M2 this afternoon.

Emergency services were called when the blaze broke out on the M2 citybound, between Greencastle and the Fortwilliam off-slip just just before 4pm on Friday, April 16.

TrafficWatch NI reported that smoke was drifting in the area, but it is understood the fire has now been brought under control.

Two appliances from Whitla Fire Station attended the incident.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Firefighters were called to reports of approximately 150 square metres of grassland on fire. Firefighters used two hose reel jets and two beaters to extinguish the fire.

"The cause of the fire is believed to have been deliberate ignition and the incident was dealt with by 4.19pm."

Meanwhile, motorists are advised that the Ballyregan Road in Dundonald has been closed due to a road traffic collision.

The road is closed in both directions and diversions are in place.
