M11 closed near Chigwell after serious crash following police pursuit

The M11 motorway is closed because of a serious crash in Essex following a pursuit by the Metropolitan Police.

The 'critical incident' happened on Wednesday morning near Chigwell, Essex Police said.

The southbound carriageway has been closed off between junction six at the M25 Interchange, and junction 4 A406 North Circular due to the police incident at around 11am.

In a statement, the force said: “We are currently on scene of a serious collision on the M11 southbound. The road will be closed for some time into this afternoon between junctions 6 and 4 southbound.

"Drivers are asked to avoid the area and take an alternative route where possible.”

The National Police Air Service Twitter account for the South East said: “Just back from assisting @metpoliceuk on a pursuit. The vehicle was stopped on the M11 southbound. @MPSRTPC”

Approximately 14 emergency vehicles from the police and ambulance services were pictured at the scene.

Photos also show a considerable number of vehicles on the motorway in light of coronavirus lockdown restrictions, and a diversion route has now been put in place.

Government advice continues to state that only journeys which are absolutely essential should be undertaken, and anyone travelling in the area should expect disruption and a longer journey time, with the road expected to remain closed for some time.
