M1 reopens at junction 31 after 9-hour closure due to serious crash

The M1 has reopened after a nine-hour closure on Sunday night into Monday morning following a serious crash.

The motorway was closed between junction 30 and 31 near Worksop and was expected to be closed "for a number of hours", according to Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit (RPU).

The incident was described by Highways England as a "serious collision" and was reported around 8pm on Easter Sunday, April 4.

South Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire Ambulance service, traffic officers and maintenance crews were said to be on scene.

Drivers were urged to find another route.

Highways England tweeted at 5am on Monday, April 5: "The M1 Southbound at J31 is now re-open. We will update further once we have more information."

Last night South Yorkshire Police tweeted: "The Roads Policing Group are currently responding to a serious incident on the M1 motorway along with other emergency service colleagues.

"It remains closed in both directions between junctions 30/31. Please avoid the area and do not join the network - plan alternative routes."

It added: "If you are held in traffic, please be patient. Preparations are being made to remove stranded traffic from the M1 shortly. The NB carriageway will remain closed for some time."
