M1 remains closed both directions after man dies following collision with Mercedes

A man has died after being hit by a car on the M1 in South Yorkshire.

Emergency services were called at around 11.50pm on Friday following reports that a black Mercedes CLA had been involved in a collision with a pedestrian.

The man, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family are being supported by specially trained officers

The incident took place in the third lane of the carriageway between junction 35A and 36 northbound, which has since been closed off in both directions.

Diversions have been put it place by Highways England and motorists have been advised to allow extra time for their journeys .

Current estimates suggest the roads aren't expected to fully reopen until at least 5pm.

Travellers headed northbound are advised to follow the "Hollow Square" diversion symbols.

Exit the M1 at J35a.

At the roundabout take the second exit on to the A616 (Warren Lane) and proceed along this road for approximately 1 mile to the junction with the A61.

At the roundabout take the 4th exit on to the A61 (Westwood New Road) and proceed along this road for approximately 1 mile to the junction with the M1 and re-join at J36.

Road users travelling southbound are advised to follow the "Hollow Triangle" diversion symbols in reverse of the above.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or may have been in the area at the time.
